Artists on Screen: Film, Art & Conversation at The Carr Center Detroit

post for Carr Center Film Screenings and artist talkback

If you’re part of the Detroit film community or just love seeing art come alive on screen, make space on your calendar this Thursday night. Films @ The Carr presents Artists on Screen Detroit, a special film screening and artist talkback event celebrating three powerful documentaries about visionary artists shaping culture in Detroit and beyond.

This isn’t just another movie night — it’s an evening exploring how art serves as healing, community, and spiritual practice. From Detroit’s bold public murals to Chicago’s design revolution, Artists on Screen Detroit dives into the stories behind the work and the people who pour their souls into creating it.

Following the screenings, there will be a live artist talkback featuring Sydney G. JamesSenghor Reid, and all the directors (including yours truly!). Expect an open, inspiring conversation about creativity, resilience, and the intersection of art and storytelling.

My Connection to The Carr Center Detroit

The Carr Center Detroit holds a special place in my own creative journey. I attended my first Detroit film festival there years ago — back when the center was located in the Paradise Valley district. Someone over there has always cared deeply about the media arts, and you can feel that same commitment alive today in the way The Carr Center continues to support local filmmakers and visual artists.

Mentorship and Mastery: Juanita Anderson

This event is curated by Juanita Anderson, The Carr Center’s Resident in Media Arts — and someone I affectionately call my sensei. I had the honor of working under her direction back in 2013 during the taping of Family Pictures USA for PBS. Watching her work up close was like taking a master class in documentary filmmaking. She’s a true force in Detroit’s media landscape — a master at her craft. Period. End of story. And let’s not forget about Thaad’s beautiful wife and my dear friend, Eden, who you want to follow on instagram now as she breaks down the art of filmmaking!

🎟️ Tickets are available now — visit the Carr Center Detroit website or check the link in my bio to reserve your spot. Come out, show love, and be part of a community that keeps Detroit’s creative energy alive.

Big thanks to The Carr Center Detroit for providing space where film, art, and community intersect — and for always amplifying voices that deserve to be seen and heard. ❤️
