🖤 Inside the Detroit Narrative Agency: Building a Home for Detroit Filmmakers
Founded in 2015 by ill weaver and adrienne maree brown with support from Jeanette Lee of Allied Media Projects, the Detroit Narrative Agency was created to challenge how Detroit is portrayed — and to empower Detroiters to tell their own stories.
For decades, mainstream media framed Detroit through deficit and decline. DNA flips that script. Through mentorship, funding, and hands-on production opportunities, the agency helps Black, Indigenous, and People of Color filmmakers tell authentic, community-centered stories that reflect Detroit’s resilience and creativity.
“At DNA, we believe that narrative power belongs in the hands of the people living the stories,” says Ashley Calhoun, Interim Executive Artistic Director. “This cohort represents the future of Detroit cinema — bold, diverse, and deeply intentional about the stories they tell and who they tell them for.”
🎥 Meet the 2024–2025 DNA Film Fellows
Each filmmaker in this year’s fellowship brings a deeply personal vision to the screen. Together, their short films explore lineage, identity, and legacy through a distinctly Detroit lens.

For emerging filmmakers of color, platforms like the Detroit Narrative Agency Film Fellowship are vital. They nurture creativity, build community, and ensure that Detroit’s stories are told from the inside out — not the outside looking in.
